In fact it is something my husband doesn't like. I can't listen to a CD 1,000,000 times with out picking up a few lyrics. I guess it's something I pay attention to more than the actual music so this was a hard one to choose. I picked this song because 1. It's pretty awesome 2. because I wanted a song who's lyrics weren't super easy to hear and learn. I also believe this to be the first Atom and His Package song I ever heard.

Day 7 Song That Reminds You Of An Event

The night I posted this I had to get rid of some pretty creepy bugs in our basement. The first day's post is your favorite song. I have hundreds of favorites so it was very hard to choose. I picked "Hell Yes" first because it is from my absolute favorite band, Alkaline Trio. My husband and I have seen them many times and they were one of the first things we talked about when we got together, since I told him to look them up, he did and of course, loved them. Another reason I chose this song is because anytime I have this cd in the radio of my car I always start with this song!

May Books

So I really dropped the ball this month. I only actually started and finished three books so I'll include the others I started but didn't finish as well. Beginning with the ones I completed.

The Replacement- Brenna Yovanoff
I really liked this book. If you've heard of the Changeling in some folklore you know that there were stories of children who were taken in the night and replaced with another child sometimes not human. In this story a human child was taken in the night by undead creatures who lived under the city that used the human children for sacrifce. Most of the time these Changeling children did not live much longer after they were switched except in the case with the main character.

Wanted- Sara Shepard
This is the last in the Pretty Little Liars series. I really enjoyed this series until this last book. It started out fine but when it starts piecing together the clues from all the other books it seems like the author wasn't sure how to connect them so they pulled out the secret twin bit.

The Customer Is Always Wrong- Jeff Martin
I liked this book, I have never worked in retail but have worked with the public since I was 16 so I have had my fair (sometimes unfair) share of awful customers. Currently working in a DMV I deal with this on a daily basis. What I liked most is that the authors of all the essays in the book were authors or journalists who worked in retail before coming into the jobs they have now.

Books I started but did not finish.

The Coke Machine- Michael Blanding
At first I was interested and read a good chunk of the story behind Coke's beginning as a medicine but when it got to the part where the company changed hands it got kind of boring.

Water Wars- Cameron Stracher
I tried to like this book, I really did. It just wasn't what I wanted to be reading at the time. I would like to go back sometime and finish it but my checkout time on my Nook expired.

March and April Books

Ok so I'm a little behind. With all the craziness that is in my house I haven't had a bit of time to sit and write out my books. Now that things have slowed down a bit and I have gotten tired of all the book titles stuck in my Nook that I can no longer read I have decided it is finally time to post my last two months worth of books!

Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang- Chelsea Handler
I LOVED this book! I heard it wasn't as good as her earlier books but I had a blast reading it. I mostly loved how in several stories she tries to talk her boyfriend into getting a shark for their condo! HILARIOUS! I seriously cannot wait for her new book to come out soon.

My Booky Wook- Russell Brand
I was really shocked at how much I didn't like this book. I figured with all the drug use and sex the book would be more interesting to me but alas, it was not. I felt bored through out most of it.

When Did I Get Like This- Amy Wilson
I really enjoyed reading this book. Amy writes stories of raising her three children in such a funny and relate-able way.

Perfect/Unbelievable/Wicked/Killer/Heartless- Sara Shepard
All books in the Pretty Little Liars series. Loved them all! I think I read each of them in 2 days at work.

Excited

Oh so I really enjoy reading books but rarely do I get excited to the point of wanting to drop everything else I'm reading for one single book. That all ends today. I actually ordered a real book instead of a nook book. What is that you ask, well that book would be The Way I See It A Personal Look At Autism and Asperger's by Temple Grandin. My little guy Max was diagnosed in September with Autism and has been absolutely amazing with all he's done since we started in the Early Intervention program we have here. Now he's almost 3 and about to age out of the program and into the school districts pre-school for children with learning disabilities. I was encouraged by his speech therapist to read some of Temple's books and this will be my first. Obviously I'm pretty excited because I hope to find out a little bit more of how my son's mind works.

February Books

Here are February’s books. There aren’t very many this month, I’ll blame it on the short month and the fact that we’ve been SUPER busy at work lately.

The Lovely Bones- Alice Sebold

So I kind of have a theme, I LOVE books that are movies/TV shows or ones that are going to be made into one or the other. I watched this movie last year and really didn’t like it as much as I thought I would. I had also tried to read Alice Sebold’s book based on her own experience with rape and I just couldn’t finish so I was a little surprised at how good the first half of this book was. Towards the end I kind of lacked the motivation to finish but made it through.

The Naked Lady Who Stood On Her Head- Gary Small

This was a really interesting read. Dr Small writes stories of past patients and their odd behaviors.

Manic- Terri Cheney

This book is about Terri’s battle with Manic Depression and how she went from one extreme to the other and how her father dealt with her illness and how she spiraled out of control after his death.

January Books

So I’ve decided to *try* and keep track of all the books I’ve read each month. Here is a list for January 2011 in no particular order.

Down Came The Rain by Brooke Shields.

I was unsure about this book at first. I actually wanted to read it for a while but it was one I was a bit embarrassed to let anyone see me with. So when I got my nook I was quite excited because now I could read all the things, trashy or not, I wanted but wasn’t going to in front of people. What I liked about this book is that Brooke Shields seems to be very open about her experiences with Post Partum Depression. I was shocked to find out she had infertility issues and was hooked on her sorrowful tale of wanting a child so badly and then when she finally got her wish not being able to handle the major life changes that come with actually getting what she wanted.

My Fair Lazy- Jen Lancaster

Oh Jen how I love you so. I love reading her books so much because they make me laugh so hard. EVERY. FREAKIN. TIME. This has to be one of my favorites of hers.

Just Kids- Patty Smith

I have no idea what made me want to read about a singer I really don’t know much about. I read a review in Entertainment Weekly and thought it sounded interesting. I wasn’t so sure in the beginning of the book and had a few thoughts about stopping but didn’t. I really knew very little about Patty and her friend Robert but enjoyed their story of trying to make something of themselves as artists in the time of the Beat Generation.

The Help- Kathryn Stockett

I loved this book. For some reason these characters sucked me in. I really enjoyed these women’s stories and watching them fight back against the prejudice that they endured as maids in 1962. I was surprised to read that the main maid character was based on the authors’ maid growing up. She was such a strong person and really key to the story of them fighting back.

Pretty Little Liars-Sara Shepard

This book is the basis for one of the trashy shows I became addicted to last year. I really enjoyed the story and it was a very quick read. As usual I enjoyed to book more than the tv series and found that they had merged the first two books to make the first season of the show.

Flawless- Sara Shepard

This is the second book in the Pretty Little Liars series. I wasn’t as into this one as I was the first but enjoyed continuing the story of the girls trying to find who was pretending to be their dead best friend who threatens to tell everyone their worst secrets.

Room- Emma Donoghue

This was another book I had read a review for in Entertainment Weekly. It is the story of a woman and her young son who are trapped in an old shed by a man they call Old Nick. At first you learn about their daily routine and then discover how they came to be in that shed. Soon the mother comes up with a plan to escape and when they do you see the boys reaction to being in the outside world away from the home he knew since birth.

Mockingjay- Suzanne Collins

I was kind of disappointed in this book. I really enjoyed the first Hunger Games but it took me a while to get into the second book, Catching Fire, and it took me a while to get in to this one as well, I think it may have been due to me not reading them one after the other. It had been a good while between reading the second and the third. I am glad I started and finished them though. I had read from a few sources they were the “new twilight” but I don’t see them quite as good

Surprise Baby Shower

<img style="display: block; I absolutely cannot wait to meet this little girl! I think everything turned out great and I got so many compliments on the cupcakes.

Gettin' Crafty With It.

Oh so very soon my brother's family will be welcoming a new baby girl into the world. Next weekend my mom and I will be throwing her a surprise baby shower and I decided that I wanted to make her a little something special. I have ventured in making onesies before with good and bad luck. I found some super cute ribbon a few weeks ago at Big Lots and decided that I would play around with making hair bows too. These are what I came up with. Everything was super easy. I used Velcro for the backs of the hair bows (hoping that baby has lots of hair!). The tie-dye ribbon I attached to the onesie with fabric glue and washed it after 24 hours to make sure the ribbon stayed on. The bows for both onesie's I hand sewed and also washed to make sure they stayed put! I had so much fun making the bows and even my husband commented on how nice the tie-dye one looked!

Booknerd survey.

Do you snack while you read? It's quite hard to eat yogurt while eating though.

What is your favorite drink while reading?
Whatever I have at the time.

Do you tend to mark your books as you read, or does the idea of writing in books horrify you?
Gah! NO I could not mark in my books!

How do you keep your place while reading a book? Bookmark? Dog-ears? Laying the book flat open?
I have some pretty cute bookmarks Kayla made me for Christmas, or I use whatever I have laying around. NEVER dog ear, I get so mad when I get a library book and someone has bent all the pages!!!

Fiction, non-fiction, or both?
Both, I usually go through phases of each though.

Are you a person who tends to read to the end of a chapter, or can you stop anywhere?
I would rather read to the end of a chapter but when reading at work I have to get up and down a lot, and sometimes have to read a part over if I didn't get to the end.

Are you the type of person to throw a book across the room or on the floor if the author irritates you?
No, I'll stop to calm down or yell at it!

If you come across an unfamiliar word, do you stop and look it up right away?
No, I don't think I've done that, I may have looked it up later.

What are you currently reading?
Dexter by Design by Jeff Lindsay

What is the last book you bought?
Dearly Devoted Dexter by Jeff Lindsay

Are you the type of person that reads one book at a time, or can you read more than one?
At times I read more than one but I'd prefer to just do one at a time

Do you have a favorite time/place to read?
My lunch break, it's super quiet. Also sometimes I'll read while the kids are watching tv.

Do you prefer series books or stand alones?
I like both, If I start a series then I'm obsessed with reading them all in order and one right after the other.

Is there a specific book or author you find yourself recommending over and over?
The Southern Vampire series, or The Sookie Stackhouse books, by Charlaine Harris. I also am loving the Dexter books right now! Go Read them!!!

How do you organize your books? (by genre, title, author's last name, etc.)
If I had the room I would do it by author, and chronological order, alas, all we have is one bookshelf that will one day die of exhaustion. :(

Mickey Mouse Cake.

Whoa, has it been a while! Mr Maxie had a birthday a few weekends ago and I made his super cute cake. Well, cute except for the giant grease/dye stain on the cake board I didn't cover. I was pretty happy with the results, especially since I had a few meltdowns during making it. Maxie seemed pretty happy too!

Max's Wolf Suit

So last year at Christmas I was trying to think of what to get my little man, who at the time was only 7 months old, and I remembered the book "Where the Wild Things Are" my brother had when he was a kid. I searched high and low until one day I found it after having to ask a sales clerk at Barnes and Noble. I was super excited especially when I read it and saw that the little boy's name was Max just like our son. After I bought it I found out that it was going to become a live action movie and decided I wanted to dress my Max up as Max from the book for Halloween. I searched (again) for a costume but all I could find was one person who made them on E-bay. I decided to make it myself with the help of my super sewing Aunt! She made all of my cousin's costumes, most of my cousin's pageant outfits, and my wedding dress. She said it would be very easy so we set to work using an old cat costume pattern and my aunt's imagination. I am so pleased with the way it turned out!

Crockpot Salsa Chicken

This meal was suggested to me by my best friend Kayla at Central Cooking. After 1,000,000 times of her telling me how much she and her husband liked it and after seeing her post the recipe on her blog I finally decided to make it! I was pleasantly surprised. It was super easy and tasted wonderful!

You will need
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 cup of your favorite salsa
1 lb of frozen chicken breast
1 packet of taco seasoning
Put the frozen chicken in the bottom of the crock pot, pour seasoning on top of your chicken, mix the soup and salsa together and spread over the chicken. Cook in your crock pot on low for 7-8 hours until the chicken is cooked. When chicken is done shred the chicken (I used my handy pampered chef chopper ( I LOVE that thing!)).
We put our chicken in tortilla's and topped with cheese and lettuce. You can make it into nachos or eat any way you'd like....My 1 year old ate it straight from the bowl!

Review: Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse Novels 1-3

I received this wonderful first book as a gift for my birthday from my wonderful best friend Kayla. As she gave it to me she said "I have a feeling this will begin another obsession." Boy was she right! This being based on how we were both obsessed with the Twilight Series and both read all four books in a matter of weeks. I had heard of this series before from both the internet forums on Goodreads and from my most favorite magazine Entertainment Weekly, where I had read about the show based on the books on HBO also and wanted to read them but I had SO many books on my library queue and wanted to knock some of them out of the way first. When I received this first book I decided to forget them begin the series. I was drawn in and in LOVE within the first chapter! I absolutely adore the main character Sookie and Charlaine Harris is such an awesome writer. I love or love to hate every single character that comes along! I have yet to be bored at any part of the three books I have finnished in the month I have had these books. After finnishing the first book I made my husband go out and rent for me the first season of Trueblood and fell in love with it too! Although they did change several main things I still feel it follows the book well.
The first of the series Dead Until Dark introduces you to Sookie and Bill (or Vampire Bill as the town of Bon Temps, Louisianna refers to him). Sookie is a waitress in a local bar and reads minds. Most of the people in town thinks she's crazy especially after she meets Bill and becomes his girlfriend. In this book Sookie tries to discover who is killing women in town who have been connected to both Vampires and her womanizing brother to try and clear both of them of the murders.

In the second book of the series Sookie is inlisted to help some of Bill's vampire friends find a fellow vampire that was kidnaped right from Fangtasia, a night club where vampires and humans come to meet that Bill's boss Eric owns. She also comes across a radical group that is fighting against vampire rights.

In the third book Sookie must try and rescue Bill from a group of vampires that want something very usefull from him. She gets help from Eric and a Werewolf and ends up learning of other supernatural creatures she never knew existed. Sure he'd be happy with a gift card for any of the home improvement stores in the area but I just didn't want to get him the same thing I did every year. This year it hit me: OATMEAL PIE! My dad LOVES my grandma's oatmeal pie. Grandma rarely makes it any more . My aunt teases my dad by telling him she only ever gets to eat it when my grandma knows my dad is coming over. When Ruthie and I took it over to him he was beaming, especially when I told him it was grandma's recipe!

Grandma Ferguson's Oatmeal Pie

Ingrediants:

1. 3/4 c Quick Oatmeal

2. 3/4 c sugar

3. 1 stick butter

4. 2 beaten eggs

5. 3/4 c maple or pancake syrup

6. 1/4 c pecans (I left these out)

*to fill pie shell sometimes it's better to use one and one half times ingrediants (I just doubled it)

Preheat oven to 350

Mix syrup and oats. I have never seen some one so in love with onions! Especially french fried onions, sometimes I'll buy ffo to make this chicken and when I go to make this dish they're all gone! I found this recipe in an old pamphlet for Hidden Valley Ranch that my grandma gave me in a recipe book. I've since seen it in magazines, only a little different. I also made some quick cheesy mashed potatoes.

French Onion Chicken

from Hidden Valley Ranch

Ingredients:

1 lb chicken breast

2 cans french fried onions

bottle of honey mustard dressing

Heat oven to 350. Its not salsa.......anyone? It's lightening bugs! While outside grilling the other night Ruthie and I noticed that the lightening bugs were out in full force. I explained to her that when I was little, my brother and I filled huge jars with the little glowing creatures. She got so excited and said she wanted to do it too. After searching for an empty jar unsuccessfully, I just grabbed a half used jar of salsa from the fridge to clean out. When Ruthie saw she asked "Mommy, do lightening bugs like salsa?"

This child is scared of bugs so I was quite surprised that she wanted to catch them but after we cleaned the jar and went back out she kept a distance. I was really the only one catching them. It was so funny, she just kept saying over and over again "Mommy lightening bugs are SO cute!". So cute she did not want them near her :)

So after she had her fill of watching me catch them we went inside to show daddy and to eat supper. After supper she was looking at the jar and talking to them. I overheard her showing them her super cool Little Mermaid shirt that plays music. I was cracking up!
After a while she decided that she wanted to let them go. We went back outside and liberated the lightening bugs and they flew away. Ruthie was so happy that we freed them, as long as they did not fly in her direction. When they were all out of the jar she got bored and decided to climb on the porch swing......

The Bizzare Culinary Tastes of a Four Year Old

My daughter eats some strange things. For example, she dips her chicken nuggets in her macaroni and cheese, she puts ketchup on her grapes and likes ranch dressing on her hot dogs. Although, I shouldn't be too shocked since my husband has been known to eat pudding with not a spoon, but string cheese as his utensil of choice. When she was asked what she would like for supper tonight she first said "cheesy taco no, I want a hot dog". After processing this in her mind for a bit she said "cheesy hot dog taco". I at first was disgusted but I remembered all the strange things she's eaten and decided it wouldn't kill her. So I heated up a tortilla shell, put on some cheese, and cut up a hot dog to put on it as well. Not surprisingly she enjoyed it (weirdo) and I won't be too shocked if she asks for one, if not something even stranger in the future.

Coolest day at work!

Today I had some interesting customers. I was just sitting at one of the desks in the testing area, reading my book, and one of my co-workers (I’ll call her “A”) were waiting on a customer. The customer said she just needed to change her name on her drivers license because she got married. When A asked to see her marriage license the lady said she had a complication, her marriage was a same-sex marriage. A said that we couldn’t do that because Illinois does not recognize same-sex marriages. Well I remembered getting a memo a while back that said if they had gotten their social security card changed we could change their drivers license. Of course I interrupted A because any chance I get to be right when she’s wrong I’m all for. Of course she argued with me and I said that I would call Springfield and see what we could do. Then another co-worker got her spouse next in line and he told her the same thing. When I called Springfield the lady did not know what to do so she tried to connect me with her manager but they were busy and she gave me their number to try and call later. Well while I was waiting to call that department back I decided to look for the memo (I have memos strung all over the break room so it was going to be a challenge). Well as I found mine my manager found it in our operations manual and it said that if we can link the two names-not by a marriage license -but for example a social security card, we can change their drivers license. Which it makes no sense to me why a marriage license even thought it’s from another state, and we do take marriage licenses from other states for straight couple’s isn’t good enough to link two people’s names together if they’re same-sex but whatever, anyways, these ladies had their social security cards changed. Apparently at the social security office they had a problem because they weren’t going to change their cards but the office called Iowa where the ladies were married and Iowa said that since their marriage license was a legal document then they had to let them change their cards, which allowed me to change their licenses! I was super excited because even though Illinois does not recognize their marriage we can still change their licenses just like everyone else!

Baby Shower Cake

Today I went to a baby shower for my husbands cousin. My sister-in-law is a pretty awesome cake decorator and she made the cake. Actually, she made two, one was a "joke" cake. Both cakes were one's with the "baby belly" on them only one cake actually had a baby in it. She took a toy baby and put it in a balloon filled with water and covered it with fondant so that when they had the guest of honor cut into it her "water broke" and she "delivered" the baby. She thought it was pretty funny, my four year old little girl however, was scared to death! The look on her face was absolutly priceless when my husband's cousin took the baby out of the middle of the belly and squeezed the water out of it. My husband and I love steak. At Christmas my parents bought us half a beef so we had steaks, hamburger, and roasts for a long time! All we had left in our freezer were three packages of steaks and nothing special to do with them. While at the grocery store one day we came across Jack Daniels EZ Marinader and decided to try it since we really LOVE the Jack Daniels steaks at TGIFRIDAYS. So this past weekend I tackled cleaning our grill which we've had forever but never really used. Tonight we fired up the grill and cooked up some really wonderful food. The weather was kind of scary (lots of wind and dark clouds, but it only sprinkled) but we got through it and it was so worth it! I also made corn on the cobb and some fast instant cheesy mashed potatos. All we did was put the steaks in the marinade during the day (about 8 hours) and cooked them to our liking it was super easy! The only thing I think I'll do next time is to take out some of the marinade to pour on top after we cook the steaks.

My first post= Deep Fried Pickles and Jones soda

On my mom's last birthday we went out to one of our local steak houses. This particular restaurant my daughter likes to call "the pigs and the peanuts" because of the large statue of a pig out side and the fact that they let you throw peanut shells on the floor. Anywhoo, my dad suggested we order deep fried pickles as an appetizer. Now, I like, maybe even LOVE pickles but was hesitant to try them cooked deep fried but they turned out to be really good! I had forgotten about them until one night this past week my husband and I were watching Deep Fried Paradise and one of the restaurants' claim to fame was deep fried pickles! I immediately decided I was making them and I was going to do it soon! So today was the day! I will say that I enjoyed mine with some Jones soda and it was wonderful!

Deep Fried Pickles

ingredients:
1. pickles of your choice (I used kosher pickles spears)
2. 2 eggs
3.1 cup flour
4. 2 cup bread crumbs (I used Italian seasoned)

Heat oil to 375. Mix together eggs, flour, and bread crumbs in a bowl. Place pickles in bowl with batter (I cut up my pickle spears to make smaller) and stir until pickles are well covered. Place pickles in oil and cook until they rise to the top. Place on paper towel to drain and cool then enjoy!
